10 Must Know NHS Staff Discounts

Money Saver Pete Work and Family 3 Comments

Looking for NHS staff discounts? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty about. Take a look at this top 10 list of NHS discounts.

Let’s be honest, the majority of NHS workers don’t have it easy. The hours are unsociable, can be very long and does the pay really reflect the work you put in? The government may think it does, but fortunately, many organisations realise you deserve some extra recognition.

Blue Light Card

Probably the best-known discount for NHS employees is the Blue Light Card. It’s free to join online or will cost you just £4.99 for 5 years if you want a physical card. I ended up buying the card because it gives you access to a bigger range of discounts.

The Blue Light Card gives you a discount on almost any service you can think of. Cinemas, insurance, theme parks, motoring and rather ironically, private healthcare. Plus, you can buy gift cards for major chains for a decent discount. You can take a look at my Blue Light Card review in further detail.

mylifestyle is available to almost all government employees. It’s free to join and is a site with multiple benefits. If you’re a parent spending a fortune on care for your kids, you can order childcare vouchers. Or if you fancy a new bike you can look at joining the Cycle to Work scheme. But it doesn’t stop there. There are plenty of discounts available for almost all major chains across the UK. These come in the form of a gift card or e-gift card (for online shopping) and can save you anything from 1% up to 15% at your favourite stores. The major supermarkets are listed – imagine 3.5% off your weekly shop for life! And if that’s not enough, you can find discounts on holidays and days out.

This isn’t a permanent offer but I have noticed it popping up more frequently. Every few months, Iceland has been very generous in offering emergency service workers 10% off their shopping. All you need to do is show your ID badge. This is worth keeping an eye out for and you can often find mention of it on social media.

Domino’s offer NHS workers up to 50% off their order. However, you will need to check with your local store. Domino’s is a franchise which means offers from various stores will differ. My local will give 50% off (yay) but only if you collect (boo).

According to the McDonalds’ website, some of their stores offer discounts to NHS employees. Similar to Domino’s, their stores are franchises so you will need to ask when you visit.

If you’re a lover of chicken (and I mean the cooked kind, not feathered) then pop to Nando’s. If you’re not, then visit elsewhere. However, Emergency Service workers receive 20% off for orders of a value up to £20. Ok, so not a massive amount, but it all counts.

NHS staff receive 15% off SIM only plans or SIM plans with a device. A nominated friend or family member can also receive a discount too. For some reason though, you need to pay a £10 membership fee. You can apply online or instore.

Not to be outdone by Vodafone, o2 will give you up to 25% off an airtime contract when you purchase a brand new phone or tablet on o2 refresh. Whether this is a great bargain or not does depend on how much your new device costs you. Take a look at o2 Open for more details.

Hilton Hotels

If you fancy getting away from it all, Hilton Hotels offers up to 40% off to NHS staff. Give them a call or book online and select Gov/Military rates.

So not the cheapest of products, but a discount is a discount. You can get up to 10% off of Apple products through their Employee Purchase Program. You can find out more here.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of NHS staff discounts. There are plenty of smaller retailers that want to say a big thank you too. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. But remember that with many of these discounts you will need to prove that you work for the NHS, so don’t forget your ID!

And don’t forget that if you wear a uniform for work, you could be entitled to a tax rebate. Find out how to claim yours for free.

  1. How do I get my 3.5% discount off my weekly shop at any of the major supermarkets, as stated above?

Hi Lesley. You will need to sign-up to mylifestyle. There you can order a reloadable card for the supermarket of your choice. You then load funds onto that card for a discounted price. The only downside is that this is currently only available instore and Aldi and Lidl aren’t listed yet.

  2. It’s fab that NHS staff can get some discounts at certain places and through schemes like mylifestyle. More awareness of this is fantastic – very helpful and thorough post! x
