Have you lost your Samsung remote or has the old one had it? Never fear, there’s no need to go out a buy a brand new TV. Unless you need an excuse to… Take a look at the best replacement remotes for your smart TV so you can stop having to ask someone to change the channels for you.
My biggest weakness when it comes to overspending is with TVs. Ever since I moved out of my parent’s house, I’ve always gone for the biggest TV I could afford. And over the last few years, I’ve flitted between both Samsung and LG, with both companies producing some great TVs.
But I was absolutely gutted when I lost the remote to my trusty 32 inch Samsung only a few months ago. As much as my family searched and blamed each other, it was never to be seen again. So, with a heavy heart, I set off to find a replacement.
Will a replacement remote work properly?
In all honesty, it’s been a while since I’ve bought a replacement remote. The last one was over 10 years ago and I had to settle for one of those all-4-one types. If you’ve never used them, they’re meant to be compatible with most TVs. The problem is, you have to programme it first and even then, it might not work fully. In most cases, only some of the buttons will actually do what they’re supposed to.
The good news is, remotes have come a long way since then and there are several on the market that will be compatible with your smart TV. That means it should work in exactly the same way as your old controller did. And they won’t set you back much either.
So let’s take a look at the top 3 replacement remotes.
Official Samsung TV remote control BN59-01199F
If you’re looking for a direct replacement for your old remote, then you can’t go far wrong with this one. The layout is of a standard Samsung design, with tough buttons and a sturdy case.
You can expect it to work from 10 metres, using the standard infared. This official remote will work with the majority of Samsung models, including non-smart and smart models. This includes nearly all FXZA and UN models. Check the model of your TV to confirm before you purchase though.
YOSUN Universal Remote Control
Although not an official model, this remote is compatible with all LCD and LED smart Samsung models. It will work straight out of the box, so won’t require any kind of setup.
As you can see, the layout of the remote is almost exactly the same as the original Samsung. It works for distances in excess of 10 metres, which means you can use it in the biggest of rooms. And unlike some remotes, it has a quick transmission response time of 0.2 seconds from when you press a button.
Amazon is generally cheaper than eBay for this remote, although you’ll find it might be a few pence more expensive than the official Samsung.
Angrox Universal Remote Control
This is another unofficial remote that should work with almost all Samsung TVs. Again, it has almost exactly the same layout as a standard Samsung remote so will be very easy to use.
This remote is ever so slightly smaller than the YOSUN, although you would be hard-pressed to tell unless you held them side by side. It works over the same distance, although the buttons aren’t quite so quick to respond.
This remote will also work without any need for programming.
Or use the Samsung app
If you don’t want to fork out for a new remote or you like the idea of not having one clogging up your table, then why not use an app instead?
Download the Samsung app to your phone or tablet and you can control your TV by using your local network or with Infared (if your device has an IR port).
Of course, this can be a bit of a pain if there are several of you in the house, as you will each need to download the app. Either that, or you need to be willing to share your phone.
Which is the best Samsung replacement remote?
This is actually quite a tough choice. The cost of all these remotes are very similar, so the price doesn’t really play a factor. I would have to say that the official remote wins it. Just. But that’s based purely on the name. In truth, the remotes all work very well. And bear in mind that the official Samsung remote is not compatible with as many TVs as compared to the YOSUN and the Angrox.
Whichever you choose, none of them will disappoint.
