Tesco 3 for 2 on Toys. Another Rip-off?

tesco 3 for 2 on toys

Another day, another offer. Tesco 3 for 2 on toys has started. But is it another Argos damp squib or decent value?

*Offer has ended*

Some of you may remember the Argos 3 for 2 sale that took place last month. It turned out that it wasn’t quite the bargain we all hoped. Lots of customers discovered that Argos had increased their prices, sometimes by as much as £20 for each item, which almost wiped out any potential savings. Queue people venting their anger across social media and Argos scrambling around with some poor excuses.

Tesco give it a go

Well, the Tesco 3 for 2 on toys offer has started, but is it any better?

You would hope, that after the controversy of the Argos offer, another company wouldn’t dare try to pull the wool over our eyes again.

I decided to compare prices between Tesco, Amazon and Argos to see if the Tesco 3 for 2 on toys was worthwhile or best avoided.

Tesco Amazon Argos
LEGO City High-Speed Passenger Train 60051 £84 £67.99 £79.99
KidKraft Kayla Wooden Dollhouse £89.99 £84.99 £89.99
Hatchimal’s Surprise Giraven £74.95 £69.99 £74.99
Nerf Modulus Regulator £65 £44.99 £44.99
Fisher-Price Imaginext Power Rangers Morphing Megazord £69.99 £43.99 £49.99
Little Tikes Cozy Coupe Anniversary Ride On Car £42 £43.40 £49.99
VTech Kidizoom Selfie Cam £49.99 £36.33 £44.99
Playmobil 6624 Christmas on the Farm Advent Calendar with Santa £20 £23.99 £24.99
Playmobil 5366 City Action Firemen Team £8.99 £6.53 £9.99
Top Trumps Peppa Pig Collectors Activity Tin £8.99 £6.53 £9.99

*Prices do not include postage.

As you can see from the table, Amazon generally provides much better prices than Tesco. However, you will often still get a better deal from Tesco if you get the 3rd item for free.

Argos, on the other hand, often has higher prices than Tesco, even before you consider the 3 for 2 offer.

Great value from Tesco then?

Not quite. There are several items that cost considerably more from Tesco. If you bought three Fisher-Price Imaginext Power Rangers Morphing Megazord from Amazon, it would cost you £131.97. From Tesco, even with one free, it would set you back £139.98.

The Nerf Modulus Regulator is also £20 cheaper from both Amazon and Argos. However, buying three of these from Tesco would save you around £5.

Is the Tesco 3 for 2 on toys worth it?

In general, yes. Tesco prices are competitive, although not always the cheapest. Remember, whenever you take part in these offers, try and buy three products that are similarly priced to get the best value. There’s no point in buying two Hatchimals playsets for £74.95 each, only to get your 3rd item for free, which is worth just £8.

But, before you make any purchases, check other sites for prices first. Smyths and Toys ‘R’ Us are always worth comparing for decent prices.

Head over to Tesco Direct to browse through the toys available.

And don’t forget, if you’re a Public Servant, you could qualify to join the CSSC. Here you can purchase Tesco vouchers which entitle you to a further 4% off.
