If you’re a civil servant or work in the public sector, there’s a good chance your pay hasn’t exactly surged over the last decade. Mine certainly never did. That’s why I take discounts seriously, not the gimmicky ones that save pennies, but the schemes that genuinely cut real costs.
I’ve used several over the years, including the Blue Light Card, but one of the most overlooked memberships is CSSC. This guide breaks down the best CSSC discounts, the full CSSC benefit list, and whether CSSC membership is actually worth paying for.
What Is CSSC?
CSSC stands for Civil Service Sports Club. It’s a membership-led, not-for-profit organisation that’s been supporting civil servants and public sector workers since 1921. It has over 160,000 members and is partly funded by the Cabinet Office.
Despite the name, CSSC isn’t just about sport. It covers health, wellbeing, days out, leisure, shopping discounts, cinema tickets, gym membership and thousands of national and local offers. Think of it as a discount card, activity hub and wellbeing platform rolled into one.
Who Can Join CSSC?
You’re eligible for CSSC membership if you’re:
Public sector employees or pensioners, including civil servants, NHS, local government, teachers, police, fire service and Armed Forces
Employees of former public sector organisations such as BT or Royal Mail
There’s also a linked membership scheme. Each member can invite up to six friends or family members aged 18+, even if they don’t work in the public sector. Linked members get the same CSSC benefits.
If you leave the civil service through redundancy or retirement, you can keep your CSSC membership as long as you continue paying directly.
In short, CSSC membership isn’t just for civil servants anymore.
How Much Does CSSC Membership Cost?
CSSC has increased its prices recently, so it’s worth being clear.
Standard membership costs £5.99 per month or £71.88 per year
Pensioner membership costs £5.49 per month or £65.88 per year
You can pay by Direct Debit, salary deduction, card or pension deduction if applicable.
It’s no longer under £5 per month, but it’s still cheap compared to what you actually get.
The Best CSSC Benefits And Discounts
Free English Heritage Entry (The Big One)
This is the single best CSSC benefit.
Show your CSSC card at English Heritage sites and you, another adult and up to six children get free entry. One visit can easily save £40–£60 depending on the site.
CSSC membership also includes free entry to Cadw sites in Wales, which many people miss.
If you regularly do family days out, this benefit alone can repay the annual cost.
Unlimited Entry To Kew Gardens And Wakehurst
CSSC members also get unlimited entry to Kew Gardens and Wakehurst.
Adult entry to Kew is usually over £20, so even one or two visits a year can make a noticeable dent in the cost of membership. This is one of the most underrated CSSC benefits.

CSSC Cinema Ticket Discounts
Cinema tickets through CSSC are genuinely good value.
Typical starting prices are:
Cineworld – from £2.75
ODEON – from £4.75
Vue – from £4.25
Tickets are bought through the CSSC website and arrive by email almost instantly.
Some chains offer extras. Cineworld has discounted snack bundles and savings on Cineworld Unlimited cards, while ODEON Limitless cards can be reduced by over £60.
There is a limit of eight tickets per cinema per month. As a family of five, this does occasionally mean paying full price if we go more than once.
Theme Parks And Family Days Out
CSSC also offers discounted tickets to UK theme parks and attractions. Savings are usually around £5–£6 per ticket at places like Legoland Windsor and Thorpe Park.
It won’t transform the price, but for a family, it quickly adds up.
Gym Membership Discounts
CSSC advertises discounts of up to 33% at over 4,000 gyms, spas and leisure centres.
In practice, discounts vary, but some gyms will reduce monthly fees even mid-contract. If you already pay for a gym, this can create ongoing savings rather than a one-off perk.
Health And Wellbeing Platform
Members get free access to a health and wellbeing platform, including live and on-demand fitness classes via Sworkit.
If you already pay for fitness apps, this can replace one. If not, it’s a nice bonus rather than a core reason to join.
CSSC Discount List: Gift Cards And Cashback
CSSC members can access My Savings+, which offers cashback links, reloadable gift cards and digital vouchers.
Discounts usually range from 2% to 15%, and cashback can be withdrawn to your bank account or reused for vouchers.

Hair And Beauty Discounts
CSSC members can access the Fabyouless card, which offers a guaranteed 25% discount at around 2,000 hair and beauty venues.
At the time of writing, a 12-month Fabyouless eCode costs £12 instead of £59.99.
CSSC Fantasy Football And Events
There’s a free Fantasy Football league with voucher prizes, plus local and national events, sports clubs and activity groups. These are more about wellbeing and socialising than saving money, but they’re there if you want them.
CSSC Referral Scheme
CSSC runs a “Member Get Member” referral scheme. When someone joins using your name and membership number, you receive £10 credit to spend on gift cards.
The CSSC App And Membership Card
CSSC now has an app where you can access discounts and your digital CSSC card. It’s basic, but it works, and you’re less likely to forget your card when you’re out.
CSSC Vs Other Civil Service Discounts

Is CSSC Membership Worth It?
Yes, for most people.
CSSC claims the average member saves over £500 per year. Whether you hit that depends entirely on how much you use the benefits, but it’s not unrealistic.
One English Heritage visit, a few cinema trips, supermarket gift cards and maybe a Kew Gardens visit can easily outweigh the £71.88 annual fee.
If you never go out, never visit attractions and don’t bother with cashback, it won’t magically save you money. But for families, regular cinema-goers and anyone who likes days out, CSSC membership is one of the better-value civil service discounts available.
