Take a look at the CSSC membership benefits to see how much you can save on cinema tickets, shopping and much more. Is the CSSC worth joining? Yes it is. Plus, you could earn £10 by using a refer a friend code (see below).
What is CSSC?
You may not have heard of them, but the CSSC has been in existence since 1921 and has over 120,000 members. They positively promote individual health and well-being and organise hundreds of events and activities every year.
It’s not just sports, but you can take part in all kinds of events from shopping days out to theatre trips. Plus, they provide savings on hundreds of local and national offers, family days out, dining, gym membership, cinema tickets and much more.
Who can join the CSSC?
Any of the below qualify to join the CSSC.
- Public Sector employees or pensioners, including civil servants, local government, the NHS, teachers, police, fire fighters and HM Armed Forces personnel.
- Employees of former Public Sector departments, such as BT and Royal Mail.
- Click here for a full list of Eligible Employers
- Also, up to six of your friends and family (18 years and over) can join with you through our ‘linked membership’ scheme.
- Linked Members will pay the membership fee (appropriate to their circumstances by Direct Debit) and have the same membership rights
- If you have previously been a CSSC member, you are eligible to re-join. If you are taking redundancy, early retirement or leaving for any other reason, you can retain your CSSC membership, regardless of where else you work, as long as you pay direct to CSSC
How much does the CSSC cost?
The CSSC allows you to pay in various ways. You can set up a Direct Debit, have deductions taken from your salary, use a credit or debit card or send them a cheque.
- Membership cost £51 per year
- Subscriptions via Salary £4.25 per month
- Retired Membership cost £45.90 per year
- Via pension £3.83 per month
What are the best CSSC benefits?
My favourite has to be the English Heritage Corporate Membership. Present your CSSC card at any English Heritage site, and you, another adult, and up to six children gain free entry. This could be a saving of over £50 with every visit. Here is a list of all the sites available.
You can also find money off days out to a lot of theme parks across the UK. Discounts aren’t massive, but you can typically save around £5-6 per ticket from places like Legoland and Thorpe Park.
CSSC Cinema ticket offers
There are also discounted cinema tickets available from all the major chains. For being a member of the CSSC, adult tickets start at:
Cineworld – £6.25
Odeon – £5.95
Vue – £3.99
Other cinema chains offering discounts include:
The Light Cinemas
Movie House Cinemas
Purchasing your cinema tickets through the CSSC is simple. Just visit the CSSC website and click ‘Cinema Tickets’. Through here, you just add the tickets you need to your basket, purchase and they are sent to you by email almost immediately.
Some cinema chains also offer more than just tickets. For example, Cineworld offers a tasty drink and popcorn deal for a discounted price. Alternatively, you can purchase a Cineworld Unlimited card (which allows unlimited entry) for over £50 off or an Odeon Limitless card with a saving of over £60.
There is a slight downside that will not be applicable to all. You are limited to purchasing 8 tickets per cinema, per month. As a family of 5 that means if we make more than one visit each month, we have to purchase some full-price tickets.
CSSC will let you know when your allocation is reached as they won’t allow you to add tickets to your basket.
If you’re a fitness fanatic, you can find discounts at over 3000 gyms across the UK. Take a look at participating gyms. Some gyms (such as Bannatyne’s) allow you to reduce your monthly payment, even if you are in the middle of a contract.
Through CSSC, you can join My Savings +. This gives you discounts at lots of retailers. It works in a similar fashion to cashback sites such as TopCashback and Quidco. Although the My Savings + savings generally aren’t as good.
However, one great feature offered is their reloadable cards. My Savings + will send you a gift card which you can load money on to. Every time you add money to the card, you receive cashback.
For example, load an Argos card and you receive 10% back. When you shop at Argos, you use your reloadable card instead of your debit/credit card. Amazon, Halfords, B&Q, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Clarks, Currys and many others offer anything from 3% up to 15% cashback. This can add up to a great discount.
I can’t list all the shops that offer a CSSC discount online because there are over 2000, and quite simply, I don’t have the time.
However, I can reveal that there is a discount Costa card available. That will give you 9% off and that’s on top of any discount you may already receive!
There are also over 4000 smaller stores where you can receive a discount. These include restaurants, pubs, health clubs and even nurseries.
Black Friday Deals
The CSSC also offers its own Black Friday discounts. This is often an increase in cashback rates when you purchase gift cards or a further decrease in the cost of cinema tickets.
If you’re a Sky Sports fan, they have offered this rather tasty 50% discount on a Mobile pass.
As a CSSC member, you qualify for a free digital Tastecard which can set you back up to £80 per year if you were to buy it separately. The Tastecard gives you either 50% off or 2 for 1 on meals at over 6,500 restaurants across the UK. Chains include Pizza Hut, Frankie and Benny’s, ASK, Zizzi and many more.
All you need to do is show your card when it’s time to pay.
The CSSC also offers a marketplace. This allows you to buy and sell items privately for free. However, when I have checked, there aren’t many items so it might not be the best place to sell.
Recommend a friend or colleague
CSSC also offers a referral scheme. Your friend will need your name and membership number when they sign-up. When they do, you will each receive £10 into your My Lifestyle account to spend on gift cards.
If you’re thinking of joining and don’t have a CSSC referral, you are welcome to use mine.

The CSSC app
Slightly late to the party, CSSC has finally introduced their own app. This is where you can access not only your discounts, but also your membership card. At least there’s now less of a chance of you heading out without your membership card.
Is CSSC worth joining?
Yes. Whether you eat out often, have days out with the family, you’re a fitness fanatic or you want to save money on your shopping, there’s plenty to here to cover the cost of under £4 per month.
There’s also plenty of activities and trips organised by the CSSC if you’re interested in the social side.
You can find out more from the CSSC by visiting their website.
If you found my post about CSSC membership benefits and discounts useful, why not take a look at a free alternative with the Blue Light Card. Although the discounts aren’t generally quite as generous, they still provide good value.
And if you have to wear a uniform to work, see how you can claim some tax back for free.
