Why Moonpig Plus Isn’t Worth the Money

If you’re a regular user of Moonpig, you might be tempted to sign up for their subscription service. After all, who doesn’t want to save money? But after 18 months of being a member, I can share why it’s simply not worth it. And I can also let you know about a cheaper alternative.

I love Moonpig. There’s nothing I hate more than having to get in the car and make a trip into town because I’ve forgotten to pick up a birthday card. Again.

Yes, the cards are a little more expensive compared to some places, but on the plus side, I’m saving on time and effort.

So, when I saw I could save money with Moonpig Plus, I thought it was a no-brainer. I use it so often, I couldn’t lose. Or could I?

What is Moonpig Plus?

It’s a subscription service, which costs £9.99 per year. In return, you receive:

• 30% off all cards
• 50% off selected cards
• A free monthly postcard
• 40% off 5 cards+
• 10% off experience gifts

How much can you save?

A standard card is £3.99 from Moonpig. With 30% off, you’ll save £1.20. So, buy 9 cards in a year and you’ll save money. If you opt for Moonpig’s bigger cards, you’ll save even more.

The postcards are £1.99 each and you can have one per month (you still pay postage). But in all my time, I’ve never sent one and don’t really see the point.

The 50% off range is very limited. So limited, that I’ve never used it.

The 10% off experience gifts isn’t too bad. The standard prices at Moonpig are similar to Buyagift. However, I can’t see that many people will use this benefit often.

Why I don’t think it’s worth it

Here is the thing. For as long as I can remember, there are always voucher codes knocking around for Moonpig. These are usually for between 20 and 30% and are completely free. All you need to do is go onto a search engine and type in “Moonpig voucher code” and you should find one easily. Just copy the code and paste it at the checkout.

No need for that subscription.

Why am I still a member?

Because I forgot to cancel the renewal. There’s me, always telling others to make sure they don’t let subscriptions automatically renew and I go and do it myself.

A cheaper alternative to Moonpig

As I said, I love the Moonpig concept and it makes my life so much easier. But it’s not cheap.

There is a better value alternative to hand and it’s the Card Factory. If you’ve ever shopped in-store, you’ll know how cheap they can be. Well, prices online aren’t quite so cheap, but you can get a standard card for £2.99, which is less than a standard Moonpig card.

Yes, if you subscribe to Moonpig Plus, your cards will be £2.79. But you will need to send at least 50 cards every year to make that worthwhile. I don’t know about you, but I don’t even know that many people.

Another plus point is that you can send cards 2nd class with Card Factory. Moonpig only offers a 1st class option, which is almost double the price.

Card Factory also offers a reminder service so you don’t forget those important dates (essential for me) and you can buy gifts with your cards.

Don’t forget cashback sites

As always, make sure you go through a cashback site before you buy your card – both Moonpig and Card Factory are listed on sites like TopCashback.

Yes, it might only be a couple of per cent on a small purchase. But it only takes a moment and it all counts.
