Moonpig Plus Review: Benefits, Cost and Is It Worth It?

Moonpig Plus is an annual subscription that gives members 30% off cards, 50% off selected designs and a free postcard every month. It currently costs £10.99 per year, with a free first standard card and postage also advertised for new members.

But is Moonpig Plus worth it?

I’ve been a member for 18 months and, despite using Moonpig regularly, I don’t think the subscription is particularly good value.

The problem isn’t the discount itself. It’s that Moonpig regularly offers promotional codes that can give you similar savings without paying for a membership.

Here’s what you get with Moonpig Plus, how much you could save and why I think there’s a cheaper way to send birthday cards.

What is Moonpig Plus?

Moonpig Plus is a paid membership scheme from Moonpig, the online greetings card and gift retailer.

Instead of paying full price whenever you order a card, you pay an annual subscription fee and receive discounts throughout the year.

The main benefit is 30% off cards, which applies automatically when you’re signed into your account.

There are also additional discounts on selected designs and a monthly postcard offer.

If you’re someone who sends lots of birthday, anniversary and Christmas cards, it sounds like a decent way to save money.

And that’s exactly what I thought when I joined.

I love Moonpig. There’s nothing I hate more than having to get in the car and make a trip into town because I’ve forgotten to buy a birthday card. Again.

Moonpig makes everything incredibly convenient. I can choose a card, personalise it and arrange delivery without leaving the sofa.

So, when I saw that I could save 30% on my orders, joining Moonpig Plus seemed like a no-brainer.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite worked out that way.

How much is Moonpig Plus?

Moonpig Plus currently costs £10.99 per year, according to Moonpig’s main membership information.

That’s roughly 92p per month, although you pay annually rather than monthly.

Your membership lasts for 12 months and automatically renews unless you cancel.

Moonpig has also advertised different membership prices through promotional pages, so it’s worth checking the amount shown when you sign up.

There isn’t a standard monthly subscription option.

What are the Moonpig Plus benefits?

Here’s what you get with a Moonpig Plus membership.

30% off all cards

This is easily the biggest selling point of Moonpig Plus.

Members receive 30% off cards, including standard, large and giant sizes.

For example, if you buy a standard card costing £3.99, the membership discount reduces the price to approximately £2.79.

That’s a saving of £1.20 per card.

If you buy lots of cards throughout the year, those savings can add up.

50% off selected cards

Moonpig Plus also gives members 50% off a selection of cards.

The catch is that the discount only applies to certain designs.

During my membership, I’ve never found much use for this benefit. Whenever I need a card, I tend to have something specific in mind.

I’m not going to choose a card I don’t particularly like just because it’s half price.

Still, if you’re happy choosing from the discounted range, there are potentially some decent savings.

A free postcard every month

Members can claim one free postcard each month.

However, there’s a catch. You still need to pay postage.

Personally, I’ve never used this benefit during my membership.

I can see how it might appeal to somebody who regularly sends postcards to friends or family, but it’s not something I would normally do.

And I certainly wouldn’t count the full retail price of 12 postcards as a saving unless I was genuinely going to buy them anyway.

Free first card and postage

Moonpig now advertises a free first standard card and first-class delivery when you sign up for Plus.

That’s a useful welcome benefit and makes the first year’s membership more attractive.

However, it isn’t something you receive every time you renew.

Do you get free delivery with Moonpig Plus?

No, Moonpig Plus doesn’t generally give you unlimited free delivery.

Although eligible new members can receive their first standard card and first-class postage free, subsequent orders normally attract delivery charges.

At the time of writing, Moonpig lists first-class delivery for standard cards at £1.90 and tracked delivery at £2.79.

That means your 30% membership discount applies to the card price, but you still need to consider the cost of sending it.

This is important because postage can make up a significant proportion of the total price of an online greetings card.

How much can you save with Moonpig Plus?

Let’s look at the numbers.

Assuming a standard Moonpig card costs £3.99, the 30% discount saves approximately £1.20 each time.

Here’s how that works over a year.

Figures are rounded and exclude postage, promotional offers and the free first card.

With an annual subscription costing £10.99, you’d need to buy around 10 standard cards to recover the membership fee from the 30% discount alone.

Of course, the free first card and postage could mean you break even sooner during your first year.

But there’s another problem with these calculations.

They assume you’d otherwise be paying full price.

And that’s where Moonpig Plus starts to look less attractive.

Why I don’t think Moonpig Plus is worth it

For as long as I can remember, Moonpig has offered voucher codes.

And I’m not talking about tiny discounts.

I’ve regularly seen codes offering between 20% and 30% off cards, sometimes more.

You can find these through voucher websites, cashback sites and Moonpig’s own promotions.

So why pay £10.99 per year for a 30% discount when you might be able to get something similar for free?

That’s the biggest issue I have with Moonpig Plus.

Free voucher codes can offer similar savings

Let’s say you’re buying a £3.99 card.

With Moonpig Plus, you pay approximately £2.79.

But if you find a free 30% voucher code, you’ll pay the same amount without needing a subscription.

Even a 25% discount code would bring the price down to approximately £2.99.

That’s only 20p more than the Moonpig Plus price.

You’d have to buy a lot of cards for that small difference to justify the annual membership fee.

Obviously, promotional codes aren’t guaranteed to be available every time you order. They can also have restrictions, expiry dates and exclusions.

But in my experience, there’s usually some kind of Moonpig offer knocking around. If you’re a Blue Light Card holder, always check there too.

You might not use the other benefits

The free postcards and 50% discount range sound good on paper.

But how much are they really worth if you never use them?

In my case, not very much.

I’ve never claimed a free monthly postcard, and I’ve never deliberately bought a card from the 50% off selection.

That means I’m effectively paying for the standard 30% discount.

And when similar discounts are often available for free, it becomes difficult to justify.

Why am I still a Moonpig Plus member?

Because I forgot to cancel the automatic renewal.

There’s me, always telling people to check their subscriptions and make sure they’re not paying for services they don’t need.

And then I go and do exactly the same thing myself.

My membership renewed before I got around to cancelling it.

It’s a reminder that even a relatively cheap subscription can become a waste of money if you’re not using it properly.

And although £10.99 isn’t a huge amount, I’d rather keep it in my pocket.

Is Moonpig Plus worth it?

For me, no.

But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad deal for everybody.

If you send plenty of cards every year, don’t want to search for discount codes and regularly use the extra membership benefits, Moonpig Plus could save you money.

It’s also more attractive during the first year if you take advantage of the free card and postage offer.

However, if you only send a handful of cards each year, or you’re happy spending a minute looking for a voucher code, I don’t think you need the subscription.

My verdict: Moonpig Plus is convenient, but it isn’t essential for saving money on Moonpig cards.

I’d rather use a free discount code whenever possible.

A cheaper alternative to Moonpig Plus

If you’re looking to save money on greetings cards, there’s another option worth considering.

Card Factory.

Most people know Card Factory from its high street shops, where you can pick up cards for a fraction of the price of some competitors.

Its online cards aren’t always quite as cheap as those in-store, but they’re still worth comparing with Moonpig.

For example, I’ve previously found standard personalised cards for £2.99, compared with £3.99 at Moonpig.

And you don’t need an annual membership to access the standard prices.

Moonpig Plus vs Card Factory

Example card prices are illustrative and should be checked before ordering.

Card Factory also offers personalised cards, gifts and a reminder service, which is particularly useful if you’re anything like me and regularly forget important dates.

The important thing is to compare the total price, including postage.

A cheaper card isn’t necessarily cheaper overall if delivery costs more.

But if you’re buying cards regularly, it’s certainly worth checking both websites before placing an order.

Don’t forget cashback sites

As always, make sure you go through a cashback site before you buy your card – both Moonpig and Card Factory are listed on sites like TopCashback.

Yes, it might only be a couple of per cent on a small purchase. But it only takes a moment and it all counts.

How to cancel Moonpig Plus

If you’ve decided the subscription isn’t worthwhile, you can stop it renewing.

1. Sign into your Moonpig account.
2. Open the My Account section.
3. Find your Moonpig Plus membership settings.
4. Choose the option to cancel or stop automatic renewal.
5. Check that you’ve received confirmation.

Cancelling the renewal normally means you can continue using your membership benefits until the end of your paid subscription period.

Moonpig also offers an initial 14-day cancellation period, although any refund may be reduced if you’ve already used membership benefits.

If you can’t find the cancellation option, contact Moonpig customer services.

My final thoughts

I still love Moonpig.

It’s convenient, easy to use and has saved me plenty of last-minute trips into town.

But loving a service doesn’t mean I need to pay for its subscription.

After 18 months as a Moonpig Plus member, I’ve found that I don’t use most of the additional benefits, and the standard discount isn’t particularly special when free voucher codes are so common.

My advice is simple.

Before signing up, think about how many cards you actually send each year and whether you normally use promotional codes.

If the numbers work in your favour, Moonpig Plus could be worthwhile.

But for me, I’ll be sticking with free discount codes and comparing prices with Card Factory instead.
