BG Services on Your Bank Statement? British Gas Charge Explained
BG Services on your bank statement is a British Gas HomeCare Direct Debit.
It isn’t a scam, and it usually means you’ve got (or had) boiler or home emergency cover with British Gas.
If you don’t remember signing up, you’re not alone.

BG Services transaction on your bank account – what is it?
BG Services is the payment name used by British Gas for its HomeCare plans.
These plans cover things like:
Boiler breakdowns
Central heating faults
Plumbing and drains
Electrics (depending on the plan)
If BG Services appears on your bank statement, you’ve authorised a Direct Debit for some level of HomeCare cover at some point.
How much does BG Services usually cost?
There’s no single price. Your monthly charge depends on:
Your location
Your boiler type and age
The level of cover you chose
Any previous claims
Most people pay between £10 and £50 per month. Anything in that range is normal. If it’s higher, you’re probably on a more comprehensive plan or covering an older system.
“I don’t remember signing up for BG Services”
This is where most people get caught out.
British Gas regularly offers 12 months of free HomeCare when you:
Switch energy supplier
Take out a new gas or electricity tariff
Accept a “free trial” add-on during sign-up
To get the free year, you’ll have agreed to a Direct Debit that kicks in once the trial ends. That detail is technically disclosed, but it’s buried in the terms and conditions.
If you’re anything like me, you skimmed them or ignored them entirely.
So even if you don’t remember signing up, the charge is usually legitimate.
Is BG Services (British Gas HomeCare) worth keeping?
Honestly? Financially, usually no.
The upside:
You won’t face a sudden four-figure repair bill
Cover is reasonably comprehensive
One call-out instead of shopping around
The downside:
These plans exist to make money
Most customers pay far more in monthly fees than they ever claim back
You’re paying for peace of mind, not value. Some people are happy with that. If you’re confident you could handle a repair bill, self-insuring is almost always cheaper.
How to cancel BG Services
The easiest way is online.
Log in to your British Gas account and follow:
Manage Account
My Account
Account Overview
View My Cover
Cancel My Cover
You can also call 0333 200 8899 (Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm).
Be prepared for a sales pitch. They’ll push hard to keep you.
Once cancelled, I recommend cancelling the Direct Debit with your bank as well, just to be safe.
Are there cancellation charges?
Sometimes.
If you’ve had work done under your HomeCare plan, especially discounted boiler servicing, British Gas may reclaim that discount when you cancel.
If you haven’t used the service, cancellation is usually straightforward and penalty-free.
Can you get a refund from BG Services?
In most cases, no.
If you’ve been paying for months or years and simply forgot to cancel, British Gas is unlikely to refund anything.
However, if there’s a genuine reason, serious illness, bereavement, or something that prevented you from managing your finances, it’s worth calling and asking. Occasionally, they’ll offer a goodwill refund.
If you just forgot, don’t expect much sympathy.

I have been paying £20 per month to BG Services. Until my son discovered this I did not know
what it was for. I am 92 years old and live alone since my husband died in October 2022. I am also a priority case because of my health and age. When my husband was alive at least once per year an engineer checked our boiler, radiators etc. I have tried to get in touch with British Gas because nobody has come to my house in the last year and I feel that the system should be checked. I had a new boiler, radiator and valves installed in October 2023. I would be obliged if you would investigate this and let me know. Thank you
Hi Joan. I have deleted your personal details to protect your privacy. I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues and about the passing of your husband.
Just to be clear, I’m not associated with BG Services. Your best bet is to ring them on 0333 200 8899. If you don’t feel confident doing this, I suggest you ask your son to do it on your behalf. All the best. Pete
