If you’ve just checked through your bank statement to see that money has been taken out by BG Services, don’t despair! Here, we’ll discuss what it’s for and what you can do about it.
What is BG Services?
BG Services is another name for British Gas Homecare. This gives you cover for your boiler, central heating, plumbing, drains and electrics.
How much you pay depends on your location, level of cover, boiler and heating system and your claims history. In general, it will cost you anywhere between £10 and £50 per month,
I don’t remember signing up…
British Gas sometimes offers 12 months’ worth of free cover. This might have been offered to you if you joined as a new customer for their electricity or gas supply. You may not remember, but when you agreed to take out the trial, you will have given them permission to take Direct Debit payments each month once your 12 months were up.
Or you may have missed that part completely as you may, like me, have a tendency to brush over the T&C’s.
Is it worth keeping?
That’s really up to you. HomeCare will give you peace of mind as you know that you won’t suddenly be met with a huge bill. And it provides a pretty comprehensive cover. However, these services are only offered because they make companies money, not because they care about you.
That means, most customers spend more money than they ever receive back.
How to cancel
If you think that this service isn’t for you, then the easiest way is to cancel online. Just log in and
- Select ‘Manage Account’
- Select ‘My Account’
- Select ‘Account Overview’
- Select ‘View My Cover’
- Select ‘Cancel My Cover’
Or you can call British Gas on 0333 200 8899. Lines are open Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm. I can’t promise that they won’t try and sell you all the benefits of HomeCare cover though.
Once you’ve cancelled, you may want to cancel your Direct Debit agreement with your bank too, just to make sure.
Are there any cancellation charges?
If you’ve had work done by British Gas and then close your account, you may be due to pay cancellation charges. For example, as a member, you’ll receive a discounted price to service your boiler. If you’ve had your boiler serviced at this discounted rate and then cancelled, BG will expect to recoup that cost.
Otherwise, you should be able to cancel without issue. Take a look at BG’s full terms and conditions.
Can you claim any money back?
If you’ve checked through your bank account and noticed that BG Services has been taking money from you for a long period, can you claim your money back?
Generally, the answer will be no. But if there’s a genuine reason why you weren’t able to use or cancel the service (such as illness), then it’s certainly worth giving British Gas a ring and pleading your case.
If you just forgot to cancel, then they probably won’t listen.
