Pinecone Research Review: My Honest Experience After Waiting 6 Years

Pinecone Research is one of those survey sites that almost feels mythical in the online money-making world.

For years, it’s been talked about as one of the best-paying survey sites, but actually getting in can be surprisingly difficult.

I personally tried to join Pinecone Research for around six years. Every time I attempted to sign up, I was told I didn’t qualify.

Eventually, I tried again using a different email address, and suddenly I was accepted.

After waiting that long to finally get in, I expected something pretty special.

Unfortunately, my experience has been quite disappointing.

Let’s take a closer look at how Pinecone Research actually works — and whether it’s worth your time.

Survey site

Pinecone Research has long been talked about as a premium survey panel, but my experience has been underwhelming. Surveys are limited, pay is lower than expected, and technical issues and disqualifications make it difficult to earn much at all.

What Is Pinecone Research?

Pinecone Research is an online market research panel owned by NielsenIQ, one of the biggest market research companies in the world.

Companies use Pinecone to gather opinions on products, advertising and services before they are released to the public.

Members complete surveys and earn points, which can then be exchanged for rewards such as gift cards or prepaid cards.

The platform has been around since 1998 and is technically legitimate — but legitimacy and usefulness aren’t always the same thing.

Getting Accepted Isn’t Easy

Pinecone Research has always marketed itself as “invitation-only.”

Recruitment tends to open only occasionally and many people report being rejected when trying to sign up.

That was exactly my experience.

For years, I attempted to join and was told I didn’t qualify.

Then I tried again using a different email address and suddenly I was accepted without any issues.

So if you’ve struggled to join, you’re definitely not alone.

My Experience Using Pinecone Research

Once I finally got inside, things didn’t improve much.

The surveys themselves are straightforward enough, but the pay and reliability have been disappointing.

Poor Pay

One of the biggest surprises was the low pay.

For example, I was recently offered 200 points (£2) to watch a two-hour film and give feedback afterwards.

For that amount of time, the reward is extremely low.

Disqualification Issues

Another problem is getting disqualified after already spending time on a survey.

On one occasion, I spent around 15 minutes completing a survey, only for the final page to tell me that I didn’t qualify after all.

That’s incredibly frustrating. And there wasn’t anywhere I could dispute it.

It’s not unusual with survey sites, but when surveys are already scarce, it feels even worse.

Technical Problems

I’ve also experienced system errors while completing surveys.

In one case, the survey crashed just a few minutes in, meaning the time spent was completely wasted.

Surveys Fill Up Quickly

Even when surveys are available, you have to move fast.

Pinecone sends email notifications when a survey is available, but spaces fill up very quickly.

If you don’t click the link fairly quickly after receiving the email, the survey is often already closed.

How Many Surveys Are Available?

In my experience, Pinecone sends roughly five surveys per week, although this can vary depending on your profile.

That might sound reasonable at first, but when you factor in:

  • surveys filling up quickly
  • disqualifications
  • occasional technical issues

…the number you actually complete can be quite small.

Rewards and Cashing Out

Pinecone pays in points, where:

1 point = £0.01

Rewards usually start from 1,000 points (£10) for a gift card or prepaid Visa card.

Unfortunately, I haven’t even managed to cash out yet, which says quite a lot about the earning potential.

Another downside is that cash payments like PayPal aren’t always available anymore, meaning rewards are typically gift cards.

Personally, I prefer survey sites that pay direct cash, not vouchers. But that isn’t a deal breaker as long as I’m getting good value.

Trustpilot Reviews

Pinecone Research doesn’t exactly shine when it comes to public reviews either.

On Trustpilot, the platform scores quite poorly, with many users mentioning similar issues:

  • low pay
  • survey disqualifications
  • technical problems
  • difficulty redeeming rewards

Several reviewers also say the platform used to be better years ago but has gone downhill recently.

Is Pinecone Research Worth It?

After waiting six years to finally join Pinecone Research, I was honestly expecting something much better.

Yes, the platform is legitimate.

But legitimacy doesn’t automatically mean it’s worth your time.

The pay is poor, surveys can be unreliable, and the earning potential is extremely limited.

Personally, there are far better survey sites available that pay more consistently and allow you to cash out faster.

My Verdict

Pinecone Research used to have a reputation as one of the best survey sites online.

Based on my experience, that reputation feels very outdated.

If you manage to get invited you can certainly try it, but I wouldn’t go out of your way to join.

In fact, this is one survey site I would probably avoid altogether.

There are simply much better options available.

  1. Thanks.
Like you, I tried to join for over a decade.
When I received an invite last month, I couldn’t believe my luck and half expected something to go wrong. It didn’t… well, not straight away. Since joining nearly 1 month ago now, I haven’t qualified for a single survey. I don’t think I will ever reach the threshold to cash out. %
