If you use Amazon Subscribe and Save regularly, you’ll know the real savings kick in when you have enough items in one delivery.

That’s because Amazon gives a small discount when you subscribe to individual products, but the biggest saving comes when five or more items arrive in the same delivery.

When that happens, the discount can jump to 15%.

Sometimes though, you might only have three or four items scheduled. In that situation, adding a very cheap extra item can actually reduce the overall cost of the order.

It sounds strange, but a 50p tin of beans or £1 cleaning product could unlock a bigger discount across your whole basket.

How Amazon Subscribe and Save works

Amazon’s Subscribe and Save scheme allows you to schedule repeat deliveries on everyday products.

You can choose how often they arrive, usually between monthly and every six months.

According to Amazon, eligible items receive around 5% off automatically, but the bigger savings happen when you have multiple subscriptions arriving together.

2–4 items in one delivery: roughly 5% discount
5 or more items: up to 15% discount

That’s where cheap filler items come in.

If you’re just one item short of the higher discount tier, adding a cheap product can sometimes increase the total saving.

Why cheap filler items can save you money

Let’s say you already have four Subscribe and Save products due this month.

If your order comes to £20 and you receive the smaller discount, you might save around £1.

But if you add a £1 filler item and reach five subscriptions, the discount might increase to 15%.

Suddenly the saving across the whole order becomes much bigger.

It doesn’t always work perfectly, but sometimes buying a cheap extra item can reduce the final cost of the entire delivery.

Amazon changes which products qualify for Subscribe and Save all the time.

Because of that, listing specific products isn’t always reliable. Something that costs £1 today might disappear tomorrow.

Instead, the easiest method I’ve found is:

Search Amazon for Subscribe and Save items, choose a category, and sort results by price from low to high.

These are the categories where I regularly find the cheapest items.

When searching through Amazon, these are some of the types of products that often appear among the cheapest Subscribe and Save items.

In my experience, grocery tends to have the absolute cheapest items, which is why I normally check that category first.

Some of the cheapest products I’ve seen

When I last searched Amazon and sorted the results by price, some of the cheapest Subscribe and Save items included:

Astonish Toilet Fresh Gel
Duzzit Antibacterial Wipes
Elbow Grease Glass Cleaner

Most of these were around 80p to £1, making them perfect examples of cheap filler products.

Of course, Amazon prices change constantly, so it’s worth checking the categories above to see the latest deals.

Watch out for price increases

There is one downside with Subscribe and Save.

Just because something costs £1 today doesn’t mean it will still cost £1 next month.

Prices can change between deliveries, so it’s always worth checking your upcoming order before it ships.

Amazon usually sends a reminder email a few days before dispatch showing the updated prices.

If something has jumped in price, you can simply remove it from the delivery.

Is it worth using cheap Subscribe and Save items?

Yes, I think it can be.

If you already use Subscribe and Save and you’re close to the five-item threshold, adding a cheap product can be a smart way to unlock a larger discount.

Just make sure the item is something you’ll actually use.

There’s no point buying random filler products that will sit in a cupboard for years.

But if a 50p tin of beans or £1 cleaning product helps reduce the cost of the rest of your order, it’s definitely worth considering.

From baby carrots to sponges to personal hygiene products, there are plenty of lower-priced products you can add to your Subscribe and Save order. Here are nine of the cheapest options.

Please note that Amazon constantly changes its Subscribe and Save items list, so I will check back regularly and update when possible. But if one of the items isn’t available, some of the others should be.

How much can you save with Subscribe and Save?

Buying an item with Subscribe and Save will save you 5% straight off the bat. But the real savings come when you add more to your subscription. If you have four items on repeat delivery, you’ll receive a further 10% discount. Add a fifth item and the discount will be 15%. But that’s the ceiling and you won’t receive any further discounts.

Look out for price increases

There is a downside to Subscribe and Save. Just because you pay a certain amount one month doesn’t mean it will be the same next time. Prices change and they often go up. When your delivery is due, check that you’re still happy with the price. Several months ago, what may have been a bargain may now be quite expensive.

Lookout for reminder emails

Amazon will send you a reminder by email when your subscription is due with a list of prices. If you’re unhappy, click on the link in the email and cancel. Be warned though, you only have a couple of days’ notice.
