Thinking about finally taking that dream trip to Disney World?

As magical as Florida is, it’s also one of the most expensive family holidays you can book. I adore Florida and if money allowed, I’d go every year. I even spent my honeymoon there. But the exchange rate has battered us over the last 15 years. My first visit got me nearly $2 for every £1… now you’re looking at $1.20–$1.30. That alone makes it more important than ever to plan properly and avoid wasting money.

This guide covers everything from choosing the right travel dates to saving on flights, villas, park tickets, food and car hire.

Florida is worth every penny… but only if you don’t overspend where you don’t need to.

When should you travel?

If you can avoid school holidays, do. The difference in price is massive, easily over £1,500 for a family of four.

Summer

• Avg. temperature: 33°C
• Humidity: Horrific
• Crowd levels: Ridiculous
• Verdict: Only go if you love queuing in a sauna.

October / November

• Avg. temp: 24–28°C
• Crowd levels: Manageable
• Weather: Much better (hurricane season tail end)
• Verdict: One of the best times to visit.

Crowd calendars like Undercover Tourist are useful if you want to avoid being crushed by everyone else’s holiday plans.

Passport validity

If you’re British, your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay. You do not need six months remaining. Still, double-check before you travel.

ESTA (2025 costs)

A new, very relevant update:

From 30 September 2025, the ESTA fee jumped from $21 to $40 per person.

A family of four now pays $160 (≈ £126) just to enter the country.
It lasts two years, or until your passport expires.

Ignore unofficial “helpful” websites that charge £40–£100 to help you apply for an ESTA. You don’t need it.

Insurance

Never go to the USA without travel insurance. Their healthcare costs make your eyes water.

• Expect to pay £80–£150 for a decent family policy with proper medical cover and realistic cancellation limits.
• If you’ve paid thousands for a holiday, make sure cancellation actually covers what you’ve spent.
• Always declare medical conditions properly; it’s not worth the risk.

Comparison sites make this easy, and cashback sites cut the price further.

Booking flights to Orlando

Two main airports serve Orlando:

• MCO (Orlando International) – closer, better, more convenient.
• Sanford (SFB) – further out, but sometimes cheaper flights.

Realistic return prices from the UK:

• Low season: £420–£520
• Shoulder season: £530–£650
• Peak: £750–£1,000+

Seat selection (sadly now standard if you want to sit together):

• £25–£45 per person each way

Flights jump up and down constantly, so check regularly.

Airport parking

Two-week parking:

• Park & Ride: £68–£95
• On-site Long Stay: £120–£160
• Meet & Greet: £150–£220

Stack cashback on top and you can easily knock 10–20% off.

To start, use a comparison site such as Travel Supermarket or Airport Parking and Hotels (APH) to get an idea of prices. Again, cashback sites can be another great way to find a discount.

Why a villa might save your sanity (and money)

I’ve stayed in hotels all over Florida. The big issue? Noise. My last stay involved what felt like 20 people in the next room having a party at 5am.

A villa, on the other hand, gives you:

• A private pool
• Actual space
• Multiple bedrooms
• A washing machine
• Free WiFi
• No noisy strangers sharing a wall with you

If you’re travelling with extended family or another family, the cost per person drops dramatically.

Villa prices (typical):

• 3–4 bed: £900–£1,200 (low season), £1,350–£1,800 (peak)
• 5–7 bed: £1,500–£2,200 (low), £2,500–£3,200 (peak)

Major sites such as James Villa Holidays have great choices but generally charge more. Airbnb usually has decent options and is slightly cheaper.

But the best value is still booking direct with owners rather than agencies. My last villa I found through a Facebook group.

Villa locations

Most villas sit in Davenport, Celebration, Clermont or Kissimmee. It’s all roughly a 20-minute drive to Disney.

Take any estimated drive time and add 5 minutes. Orlando traffic follows its own rules.

Car hire in Florida

If you’re staying in a villa, a car isn’t optional. If you stay on-site at Disney or Universal, you can skip the car completely.

2025 car hire prices:

• Intermediate SUV (2 weeks): £420–£550
• Full insurance (recommended): £8–£14/day
• Cashback: 8–12%

Child seat costs:

Still painful:

• Fixed rate: £60–£80 per seat (best case)
• Per-day charges: £10–£15/day (worst case—£140–£210 per trip!)

Buying one at Walmart is often cheaper than renting.

SatNav

Rental companies still charge £12–£15/day for outdated junk.

Better options:

• Google Maps offline (free)
• Navmii (free, offline)
• Buy US maps for your TomTom/Garmin: £40–£55
• Buy a Walmart SatNav for $55–$80 and sell it when you return

Which parks to visit?

If you’re going all that way, you’ll want to see the big ones, but don’t try to do everything.

Disney World

Four theme parks + two water parks.
You need two days per park if you want to avoid rushing.
The fireworks alone knock spots off anything in the UK.

Universal Orlando

Two theme parks + a water park.
More thrill rides. Perfect for teens.

Busch Gardens (Tampa)

Massive coasters and plenty of animals.
About two hours away.
Don’t accidentally navigate to the Virginia one.

Legoland

Perfect for younger families.
One day is usually enough.

Getting the best price for park tickets

This is where the real cost hits you.

Disney 14-Day Magic Ticket (2025)

• £579–£629 adult
• £559–£609 child

Universal 3-Park Explorer (2025)

• £355–£395 adult
• £335–£365 child

Disney + Universal Combo

• £965–£1,050 adult
• £925–£995 child

Prices fluctuate with the pound vs the dollar. Always compare multiple sellers.

Combo tickets

These can save £20–£40 per person, sometimes more.

Don’t buy everything

Three or four parks over two weeks is enough.
You don’t need to hit every attraction in Florida.

Using your mobile phone

UK mobile networks no longer include USA roaming in their allowances.

Best options now:

eSIM (cheapest + easiest)

Airalo:

• $45 (20GB, 30 days)

Physical SIM

AT&T/T-Mobile prepaid:

• $30–$40 for unlimited calls + data
• Premium unlimited: $50–$65

If you only need emergency data, rely on villa WiFi.

Food costs

Food adds up fast.

Typical prices:

• Burger & fries: $13–$17
• Restaurant entrée: $18–$28
• Disney quick service: $14–$16
• Disney table service: £30–£50+

The Kids Eat Free Card

Costs £18–£25. Find out more.
Kids eat free with every paying adult at selected restaurants.
Worth it if you eat out a lot, pointless if you don’t.

Spending money

Avoid airport exchange at all costs.

The best way to spend money in the US is with a fee-free travel debit card, such as:

• Chase
• Starling
• Monzo (ATM limits apply)
• Revolut (ATM limits apply)

Typical exchange rate: $1.20–$1.30 per £1

Withdraw cash from ATMs sparingly, as many US ATMs charge fees.
