How Does Motorway Work? My Experience Selling 4 Cars

Motorway lets you sell your car online by putting it in front of thousands of dealers who compete to buy it. You enter your registration, upload photographs, receive dealer offers and arrange collection from home. There’s no upfront listing fee, although Motorway now charges a service fee of up to £99.99 when your car sells.

I’ve sold four cars through Motorway, and all four sales went smoothly. The dealers paid the agreed prices, collection was straightforward and I received my money quickly.

That doesn’t mean Motorway is perfect. It’s not the fastest way to sell, and the introduction of seller fees in 2026 has made it slightly less attractive.

But would I use it again? Absolutely.

Here’s how Motorway works, what it costs, how much you could get for your car and what I’ve learned from using it.

Motorway review

Car selling service

Motorway is one of the best ways to sell a car in the UK if you want a strong price without the hassle of a private sale. Dealer bidding usually pushes prices higher than instant buyers, and the process is genuinely easy. Minor delays with collection and the occasional inconsistent dealer stop it being perfect, but it comfortably beats most alternatives.

Motorway valuation

Let’s look at each stage in more detail.

Step 1: Enter your registration and get a valuation

Start by visiting Motorway and entering your registration number and mileage.

Motorway uses vehicle information and market data to provide an estimated selling price.

This is only an estimate, not a guaranteed offer.

The actual amount will depend on your car’s condition, specification, service history and the bids dealers are willing to make.

Step 2: Describe your car

Next, you’ll need to provide more information about your vehicle.

This includes its condition, optional extras, service history and any damage.

My advice is to be completely honest.

If there’s a scratch, dent or damaged alloy wheel, declare it.

You might worry that mentioning every little mark will reduce the valuation, but it’s better than having a dealer discover something unexpected when they arrive.

Step 3: Take photographs

Motorway provides a guided photography process through your phone.

It shows you which angles to photograph, including the exterior, interior and any damage.

For a normal-sized car, it’s fairly straightforward.

When we sold my wife’s Hyundai i800, it was a little trickier. It’s a large vehicle, so getting the right angles took longer than expected.

Still, the instructions were easy enough to follow.

I’d recommend cleaning your car beforehand and taking photographs in good daylight.

Step 4: Your car enters the dealer auction

Once Motorway has approved your vehicle profile, it’s advertised to its network of verified dealers.

Rather than receiving one fixed offer, dealers compete to buy your car.

This is the main reason I like Motorway.

Competition can push the final price above the initial valuation.

However, that isn’t guaranteed. The highest bid might be below your guide price, depending on demand.

Step 5: Accept or reject the offer

After bidding finishes, Motorway presents the best offer.

You can decide whether to accept it.

If you’re not happy with the amount, you don’t have to proceed.

I’d always recommend getting a valuation from We Buy Any Car or another competitor before accepting.

That way, you have something to compare it against.

Step 6: Arrange collection

Once you’ve accepted an offer, the buying dealer or collection partner arranges to collect your car.

They’ll check that the vehicle matches the description and photographs you provided.

If everything is as expected, the sale can go ahead.

You don’t need to deliver the car to a dealership, which is a major advantage.

Step 7: Receive payment

Most Motorway dealers use Motorway Pay, which allows payment to be arranged securely during collection.

Motorway says payments through this system can arrive within minutes, before your car leaves the driveway.

That’s been consistent with my own experience.

I’ve always received my money quickly, without having to chase anybody.

However, the precise process can differ if a dealer pays you directly.

Don’t release your car or keys until you’ve confirmed the payment has arrived in your account.

How much does Motorway charge to sell a car?

Motorway introduced seller service fees in 2026.

Previously, one of its biggest attractions was that sellers didn’t have to pay anything.

Unfortunately, that’s changed.

The good news is that getting a valuation and listing your vehicle remain free.

You only pay the standard service fee when your car sells.

Motorway seller fees in 2026

Final selling priceService fee
Up to £1,000Free
£1,000–£4,999£29.99
£5,000–£9,999£49.99
£10,000–£19,999£79.99
£20,000 or more£99.99

For example, if your car sells for £12,000, you’ll pay a £79.99 service fee.

That leaves you with £11,920.01, assuming there’s no outstanding finance or other adjustment.

If your dealer uses Motorway Pay, the fee is normally deducted automatically.

If the dealer pays you directly, Motorway will send you a payment link for the service fee.

There’s also an optional £29.99 promoted listing feature, but this isn’t necessary to sell your car and doesn’t guarantee a buyer.

Is Motorway still worth it with the fees?

I think so.

Obviously, I’d rather not pay an extra £79.99 when selling a £12,000 car.

But the important thing is the final amount you receive.

If Motorway offers £12,000 and another company offers £11,500, Motorway is still comfortably ahead after its fee.

On the other hand, if the offers are almost identical, the fees could make a difference.

Does Motorway give good prices?

In my experience, yes.

I’ve compared Motorway against several other car-buying companies, and it’s performed well.

Here are the results from an earlier comparison I carried out using two different vehicles.

CompanyCar 1Car 2
Parkers guide price£11,130–£12,665£13,235–£14,895
We Buy Any Car£12,640£13,670
The Car Buying Group£10,804£10,554
We Want Any Car£12,261£13,444
Cazoo (former service)£10,875No quote
Money4yourMotors£12,589£13,584
Exchange My Car£12,090£12,485
Motorway£12,783£13,891

These are historical valuations from my original comparison, not live 2026 offers. Cazoo’s former car-buying operation has since changed. Figures are before Motorway’s newer seller fees.

Motorway came out on top for both cars.

For the first vehicle, it offered £143 more than We Buy Any Car.

For the second, the difference was £221.

Even after allowing for Motorway’s current fees, those particular results would still favour Motorway.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Motorway will always offer the most.

Car valuations change constantly, so I’d never rely on just one quote.

Motorway vs We Buy Any Car: Which is better?

I’ve used both services, and they suit slightly different needs.

If I wanted to sell my car today, I’d probably start with We Buy Any Car.

But if I could wait a few days, I’d check Motorway first.

I’ve generally found the prices more competitive, and I prefer having the car collected from home.

Does Motorway pay the price it offers?

This is probably one of the biggest concerns people have when using Motorway.

You accept a price online, but what happens if the dealer arrives and wants to pay less?

In my case, it hasn’t been a problem.

I’ve sold four cars through Motorway, and every dealer paid exactly what we’d agreed.

However, that doesn’t mean reductions never happen.

If a dealer discovers damage, mechanical problems or discrepancies that weren’t included in the original description, they may ask to renegotiate.

There can also be disagreements about a vehicle’s condition.

You don’t have to accept a lower offer.

If you’re unhappy with what the dealer proposes, contact Motorway before agreeing to anything.

My advice is simple: be honest about your car’s condition, photograph any damage clearly and keep a record of the agreed offer.

How long does selling a car on Motorway take?

Motorway isn’t designed for people who need to sell a car within the next couple of hours.

You’ll need time to complete the vehicle profile, upload photographs, receive bids and arrange collection.

The auction process itself can be quick, but collection depends on the buying dealer and your availability.

I’d allow several days for the whole process, although it can take longer.

Once the car is collected, payment is normally much quicker.

Can you sell a car on finance through Motorway?

Yes, Motorway can help you sell a car with outstanding HP or PCP finance.

You’ll need to obtain a settlement figure from your finance provider.

The buying dealer can then arrange for the outstanding finance to be cleared.

If your car sells for more than the settlement amount, you’ll receive the difference, less any applicable fees.

For example:

  • Final selling price: £12,000
  • Outstanding finance: £8,000
  • Motorway service fee: £79.99
  • Amount you receive: £3,920.01

If you owe more than the car is worth, you’ll need to cover the shortfall.

Motorway doesn’t currently support selling vehicles held under personal contract hire (PCH) agreements.

Is Motorway legitimate and safe?

Yes. Motorway is an established UK car-selling marketplace that connects private sellers with verified professional dealers.

Its payment system is designed to make the handover more secure.

However, no car-selling process is completely risk-free.

I’d still recommend checking all the paperwork, confirming the final price and making sure the money has reached your account before releasing the vehicle.

Is Motorway worth using?

For me, definitely.

I’ve sold four cars through Motorway and had four positive experiences.

The prices have been competitive, I’ve avoided dealing with private buyers and the payment process has been straightforward.

I don’t particularly enjoy the photography stage, especially with larger vehicles, but that’s a fairly minor complaint.

The introduction of seller fees is disappointing, although it doesn’t automatically make Motorway poor value.

The important thing is comparing the amount you’ll actually receive.

If Motorway offers the best net price and you’re happy waiting a few days, I think it’s an excellent option.

My final verdict

Motorway isn’t necessarily the quickest way to sell your car, and selling privately might get you more money.

But it offers a good balance between convenience and price.

After four successful sales, it’s still one of the first services I’d use when selling another vehicle.

My advice is to get a Motorway valuation, compare it against at least one competitor and factor in the selling fee before making your decision.
