Octopus Fan Club: Up to 50% Off Electricity When It’s Windy

Octopus Energy has introduced something genuinely different with its Fan Club scheme: up to 50% off your electricity when your local wind turbine is spinning. It’s clever, a bit niche, and yes… they absolutely missed a trick by not calling it Octopus Only Fans.

I’m a big fan of Octopus Energy and I’ve made use of a lot of their schemes and tariffs over the years. From free energy during Power-up events, a loyalty bonus thanks to Octoplus, and cheaper energy due to their Tracker Tariff, it’s unlikely that I’ll switch away anytime soon.

And when I heard they had introduced something called Fan Club, it had me intrigued.

What is Octopus Fan Club?

Octopus Fan Club links your electricity price to the output of a local wind turbine.

If that turbine is generating power, you automatically get:

• 20% off your electricity unit rate when it’s spinning
• 50% off when output hits a higher “strong breeze” threshold

The exact trigger for the bigger discount depends on the turbine and location. For example:

• Market Weighton’s turbine needs to hit 200kW
• The Lincolnshire offshore site needs a hefty 3,350kW

The discount only applies to the electricity you use during those windy periods, and Octopus applies the savings as a credit to your bill.

Is it for every Octopus customer?

No, and this is where things get restrictive.

Right now, Fan Club is only available in four specific locations. Octopus has said it plans to expand the scheme, and you can register your interest to give them a nudge, but for now it’s very postcode-dependent.

How does Octopus Fan Club work?

IIf you live in one of the eligible postcodes:

• Head to the Octopus Fan Club page
• Select your local turbine
• Enter your postcode and follow the sign-up steps

When the turbine generates power, Octopus tracks your electricity usage via your smart meter and applies the relevant discount automatically. You can also see estimated discounts and forecast turbine output online, which helps if you want to time energy-hungry tasks.

What’s the catch?

There are a few, and they matter.

First, you must have a smart meter. There’s no workaround here, as Octopus needs half-hourly data to calculate the discount. I know smart meters still divide opinion, but realistically, this scheme wouldn’t work without one.

Second, you can’t be on a smart tariff. That means no Tracker, Agile or Octopus Go. You’ll need to be on a standard variable or fixed tariff to join Fan Club. For a lot of people, that alone will rule it out.

Third, while Octopus does show turbine output online, it’s not always obvious when you’re hitting the full 50% discount. If you’re extremely cost-conscious and want to shift usage precisely, judging wind strength in real time isn’t exactly straightforward.

Is Octopus Fan Club worth it?

Honestly? It depends.

If you’re already making serious savings with Tracker or Agile, Fan Club probably isn’t worth switching for. Those tariffs can beat Fan Club pricing even on a windy day, especially over the long term.

But if you:

• Live in an eligible postcode
• Don’t need EV charging tariffs
• Use most of your electricity during the day
• Like the idea of local renewable power actually saving you money

…then Fan Club could knock a noticeable chunk off your bill when the weather plays ball.

Typically, I don’t live in a qualifying area, and even if I did, I’d probably stick with Tracker. It’s more predictable, and I prefer knowing roughly what I’ll pay rather than relying on the British weather.
