User Interviews review

Online interview site

A decent site to boost your income. Most users should see an average of around £50 per hour. The only real downside is the fact that you might be paid in gift cards instead of cash. But there is a wide range to choose from.

User Interviews

Anybody that knows me will tell you I’m always on the hunt for new ways to make money on the side. Being fed up with my job, I would much prefer to do something from home, rather than put in extra hours for somebody else.

Online survey sites have always served me well and it gives me the chance to earn from my sofa or when I’m out and about ferrying my kids around. But I’ve always fancied earning a little bit more, and that’s where online interviews come in.

And the latest site for me to take a look at is User Interviews.

What is User Interviews?

User Interviews is a platform that puts companies who are looking for feedback on their products in touch with members of the public. And, these companies are willing to pay for your time. Most of this feedback is given through interviews but there are other ways to share opinions, such as user testing.

The company started back in 2015 and now has over 2.1 million users sharing their opinion.

How does User Interviews work?

Just visit the User Interviews site and create an account. It will take just a couple of minutes and you’ll need to share some information such as your name, date of birth and contact details.

Once done, your account will give you a list of jobs you can apply for. Each task briefly describes what the job involves, how long it will take and the amount it pays.

If you find a task that you like, you’ll need to click the ‘apply’ button, where you’ll be asked a set of questions (usually around five) to see if you’re a good fit for the study. If you’re chosen, you’ll receive an email and text message with further details.

What do the tasks involve?

There are four main study types:

1-on-1 interviews – these will involve you talking to an interviewer for around 30 minutes to an hour about a particular topic or product. It’s usually a simple question and answer type study.

Focus groups – with this type of market research, you’ll be chatting about a topic, but you will be with four or five other people. It will be led by a researcher, and they usually last around 90 minutes.

Multi-day studies – this type of research study usually takes place over several days but can last up to a couple of weeks. You may have to complete an online diary, upload photos or submit videos. As a participant, you won’t usually have to answer questions from a researcher unless they need you to clarify something.

Unmoderated tasks – often much shorter than any of the jobs above, unmoderated tasks will involve you visiting a website and sharing your thoughts. Most of the time, they will be recorded, but you won’t need to speak to anybody live and face any interview questions. This is known as UX research (user experience). You may be required to download a UX research tool to your device, although this can be deleted immediately after using.

The vast majority of interviews and focus groups will take place online, although there is the occasional opportunity to do them in person.

Examples of studies I’ve taken part in

It’s important to note that the research studies you take part in are confidential, which means that you can’t reveal too much to other people. However, I can give you a little taster of some of the tasks I’ve taken part in and none required any specialist knowledge.

The majority of jobs that I have completed are the unmoderated tasks. These are very quick and simple to do and pay around 50 pence per minute. I have reviewed software such as car apps and travel websites and let UX researchers know what has worked well and what hasn’t.

I took part in a study for a major film studio. I had a 30-minute focus group, then went away to watch a film. A week later, we had another focus group for 90 minutes, where we discussed the movie and potential storylines for a sequel. For this, I was paid around £200, with some users even earning a bonus.

I have also been interviewed about double-glazing and asked about the types of windows I would consider. The interview paid around £60 and lasted for an hour, although 20 minutes of this involved listening to a podcast.

Studies from User Interviews

How much can you earn?

Although the amount you earn changes between studies, I found that you earn roughly $1 for every minute. That’s around £50 per hour.

How are you paid?

As you may have just picked up on, User Interviews is based in the United States and pays you in $US, so how much you earn depends on the conversion rate on the day. But you aren’t charged conversion fees.

All studies listed on the User Interviews website will say that they pay you in gift cards (for use in places like Amazon). However, I have found some researchers ask you how you would prefer to be paid, and they may send your payment by PayPal.

Payment should be with you within 10 business days. In most cases, it’s much quicker.

Tips for User Interviews

If you’re keen to earn, apply for as many studies as possible. And make sure you do it as soon as possible, as there are plenty of research participants that use the site and spaces fill up quickly.

Always turn up for a user interview study on time. Researchers only need you for a short period and it’s quite rude if you miss even just a few minutes. Of course, something may happen during the day, so you may not be able to make it on time or miss it altogether. But there’s a messaging system that allows you to let researchers know if there are any issues.

If you’re taking part in unmoderated tasks including usability testing, ensure you still give thorough answers. Because you’re not talking to somebody directly, you can be tempted to rush through. But doing this may mean that you won’t be invited to future studies.

User Interviews referral

Another great feature of User Interviews is the fact that it has a referral scheme. Find your personal link in the account section and send it to friends and family. When they join and complete a study, you both receive $10.

My User Interviews review conclusion

This is one of the better platforms I’ve used for online interviews. Around £50 per hour is hard to beat for something you can do from home, and the tasks are usually interesting rather than painful.

Gift card payments aren’t ideal, but with the range of retailers available, they’re rarely wasted. Even completing two interviews per month could add over £1,000 per year to your income.
