If you’ve ever looked at paid online surveys and thought, “There’s no way that’s worth my time”, I get it.

I thought the same.

When I first started, I was earning 35p for 15 minutes and convincing myself it was fine because I’d just be watching TV anyway. That works out at £1.40 an hour. Not exactly life-changing.

Fast forward a few years, and I had a year where I earned just over £18,000 from online surveys and research sites. Around £16,000 of that came from Prolific alone. These days, I average closer to £12,000 per year — and that doesn’t include focus groups or website testing.

That isn’t typical. But earning £2,000–£5,000 per year absolutely is achievable if you do it properly.

Most people fall into one of three categories:

Casual user: £50–£200 per month
Consistent user: £200–£500 per month
Advanced (multiple sites + high-paying platforms): £800+ per month

The biggest difference isn’t just time.

It’s platform choice.

The majority of my earnings have always come from higher-quality research platforms — not low-paying “complete 100 surveys a day” websites.

How Much Do Online Surveys Pay Per Hour?

This is what people really want to know.

Most traditional survey panels work out at around £5–£10 per hour.

Higher-quality academic and research platforms can pay £10–£20+ per hour.

Occasionally, specialist studies can hit the equivalent of £25+ per hour.

When I stopped clicking anything under my personal minimum rate, my overall earnings increased — even though I was spending less time doing surveys.

That’s the key most people miss.

What’s a Good Hourly Rate for Surveys?

Personally:

Under £5 per hour – only if it’s a very slow day
£7.50+ per hour – acceptable
£10+ per hour – ideal

If the estimated time isn’t shown before you start, don’t touch it.

There are survey sites that redirect you to “partner surveys” without telling you how long they’ll take. That’s how you end up earning £2 per hour without realising it.

Not All Survey Sites Are Equal

This is where beginners waste months.

Some sites effectively pay £1–£3 per hour once you factor in screening and disqualifications.

Others consistently pay well and treat participants fairly.

Before starting any survey, check:

• Estimated completion time
• Reward amount
• Equivalent hourly rate

If it looks vague, skip it.

There’s always another study coming.

How to Make More Money From Online Surveys

Use Your Phone and a Computer

Some surveys only appear on desktop. Others show up inside apps.

Platforms like Prolific, YouGov and Branded Surveys can display different opportunities depending on device. If you only use one, you’re missing out.

Don’t “Grind” for Hours

Blocking out three hours and forcing it rarely works.

You’ll run out of decent-paying surveys and end up working for peanuts.

Some days I spend 10 minutes. Other days a couple of hours if strong studies are available.

If nothing worthwhile is there, I stop.

Understand How You’re Paid

Most UK survey sites pay via:

• PayPal
• Bank transfer
• Gift cards (Amazon, supermarkets, high street retailers)

They won’t replace a full-time salary for most people.

But as a flexible extra income, you can do:

• In the evenings
• During your commute
• While watching TV
• Around childcare

They’re hard to beat.

You don’t need qualifications. You don’t need interviews. You don’t need to commit to fixed hours.

You just need to be selective.
